Depends on the fandom. I'm no BNF, but there's been a few where I've seen an over whelming opinion that makes me O_o at people and that's when I make a post with the "I feel like the only person who..." etc.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-05 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
in general I just wanna scourge 'Am I the only one who--' from the english lexicon. 99% of the time it is followed by something either incredibly PA or incredibly 'plz pat me on the ass for something that most people do'. Basically unless you are gonna follow it up with something along the lines of '--believes the ancient aliens dude is actually a hyper intelligent alien who has been creating these programmes to discredit all alien related research to avoid being detected' don't bother using it.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-05 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Can we add "Has anyone..." to that ban please? Every time I see a post in a general chatter comm asking something like "Has anyone else seen $NewBlockbusterMovie?", my eyes roll out of my head and down the stairs, and all I can think is, "No. You're the only one."

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I vote we also include "Unpopular opinion...." 9 times out of 10, what follows that statement is not in any way, shape or form unpopular.

I feel like most people use that phrase here to mean, "I feel this way and I know there are other people out there who think the same so can I get a sound off of similar thinking individuals? Thanks."

Because that's what it looks like.

Yes, IA. It's just that the way they do it may appear irritating.

It's a bit like demonstratively sulking in a dark corner at a big party to get some attention from the others.

Ah, yes, that's exactly it. I don't actually mind them wanting to find similar thinking individuals. It's how they do it that makes me roll my eyes a bit.

Am I the only one who agrees with this secret???

Nah,man. There'll always be a person to share an opinion with you.But I take it more 'Look this thing occurred to me and I never saw anyone talking about it'.

...I don't use this construction, but I do this shit. Except I usually whine about how there's nobody who likes same things as I do; and in the majority of the cases, sadly, my whining is justified.

But I am very grateful for the existence of people who actually DO enjoy my favourite works of fiction. It was really awesome to discover just how many people liked Murder Rooms. Gives me the warm fuzzies. And this encounter with the Chesterton anon was wonderful.

IDK, I simply hope that I'm not obnoxious, and I try not to do this anymore. I get how it can annoy the blazes out of people. Sorry, anon. Perhaps the fact that I don't whine about opinions partially redeems me. Doing this would be silly.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-05 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
People that whine about how no one likes the same things annoys the shit out of me. I'm sure if you look hard enough you'll find someone who enjoys the same things in the same way.

IKR? I'm sorry :( I'll try to stop.
Frankly, I do think that there things that are just hopeless, but it doesn't mean that I should whine about them.

It's not just you, but it's not just fandom either.

Anytime there's a crowd "gather together" under some nominal umbrella, the social aspect becomes almost as big a chunk of the activity pie as the actual reason for the group in the first place. (e.g. sewing bees, motorcycle clubs, organized religion ...)

(Anonymous) 2013-05-05 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
But... isn't it just an expression? I've never met anyone who used this in a sentence and literally believed they were the only one.
Sometimes you just get that feeling that you are alone with a certain opinion and you would like to find likeminded people that you click with.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-05 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

Also, key phrase: I feel like.

It doesn't matter how many people share your opinion, if your opinion isn't the same as the majority, it can sometimes feel pretty isolating. I, for example, often feel like the only person in fandom that doesn't ship Sterek and Destiel. Of course I know it's not true, but still.

Basically, you need to learn to not take things so literally.

It's not about taking things literally, though. It's about the whole woe-is-me attitude that the OP is complaining about.

When it comes to fandom, you're probably not going to be in majority for a favorite ship/character/opinion 100% of the time. And I just find it very irritating when people say this when there are a ton of people who agree with them. You bring up Sterek and Destiel, and there are so many people who not only don't ship those pairings but flat-out dislike them. People have made secrets on here saying they don't ship those things, and pretty much everyone on here has agreed with them.

It just reeks of the "special snowflake" attitude and ship/character-shaming. There are plenty of things I ship that aren't super popular, and there are characters I like that a lot of people in the fandom don't like, but I don't have to make a post about being the "only one" in order to find people who agree with me and like the things that I do.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
lol anyone who seriously uses the phrase "ship-shaming" is not worth talking to

Hah me too. I'm all, "BLLLEURGH learn to google some more and head out of your tiny box of internet you goddamn snowflake wannabe >:U"

I don't even know why I react that way, but I like to think I'm doing the world good by internalising it. Bottling up the suck is my way of life.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-05 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
So much agreement right here. To me it's just a way for someone to fish for compliments or like-mindedness so that they can ass pat each other. Particularly BNF's. That's how they build up their little army of white knights.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, yes I see what you mean.

My fandom tends to make fandom versions of canon characters, and they tend to be pretty popular, but people love canon characters anyway. A few weeks ago a person who's very active in my fandom asked if she was the only one who liked the fandom darling in his canon form and that she wanted to make a comm focused on canon character but she was afraid she would receive a lot of hate for it.

Now, her saying that really annoyed me. One, she perfectly knows there are a lot of people who shares her love for said character in his canon form, so it felt like she wanted a nice pat in the ass as someone else here said; second, I've never ever seen someone get any kind of hate for expressing a preference for canon characters, so I felt it more like a veiled attack on people who prefer fanon characters, as if she was saying "I'm so afraid that that crazy part of the fandom will attack little poor me" despite that the fandom in itself is pretty tame; we may not share the same preferences, but we're no gonna hunt her for it.

I really wanted to tell her "yes, sure, no problem, do what you want to do, but honey, you really are overreacting this time."
