I prefer a balance between happy and downright depressing. My issue with happy endings is that they can feel misplaced - when you go from a scene where the lead couple is crying because everyone they knew is dead or injured, and suddenly they're kissing and the sun is rising, it bugs me. On the other hand, not everything needs to be a tragedy. And I like happy endings when they're done in a way that doesn't leave a bad taste in my mouth.
pantswarrior: Kotetsu smiles, because everything's going to be fine. (optimist)

This, exactly. Sometimes a HAPPY ending just would feel tacked on. I remember some years back, I beat two games not too far apart from each other, and both of them had an absolutely perfect ending for the feel of the game - one basically involved practically every named character who wasn't already dead dying, the other was pretty cheerful "now that we've saved the world, let's still be friends and adventure together!" material. I loved them both, because they were both exactly the endings the games in question deserved, given the tone of the games until that point.

ME3, Extended Cut: "Yeah, all those hours we spent showing you that Reaper technology is a corrupting force that breaks even the strongest will and has been shaping entire civilizations? WE DIDN'T REALLY MEAN IT! THE REAPERS ARE NOW YOUR FRIENDS!"
pantswarrior: The characters of Vagrant Story don't understand pants. (vs)

Hahah. I have not played the ME series yet, but I did hear a lot of noise about people hating the ending for ME3... that would do it for me, yeah.

Like okay, Vagrant Story being my favorite game ever, and my two favorite characters dying in the ending... it made a lot more sense than if the main character found out his memories hadn't been altered, and was so happy that he used his newfound powers to bring everyone out of the crumbling zombie-infested earthquake-prone city safely, and they journeyed together happily ever after.
