I prefer reading and writing angst. I love love love to be sad and cry when I'm reading and watching TV; I find it extremely cathartic. I am always more drawn to the tragedy and the bittersweet and the downright sobby. But I in no way think that angst as a genre is superior to anything else or that something is better written just because it's sad. I think writing quality and tonal quality are pretty much completely divorced from each other. I've read brilliantly hilarious crack fics, tear your heart out angst fics, and joyous fix-it fics that are all extremely well written.

And I find myself loving happy endings but can never justify it in my own writing, because of the context, and the sad endings are justifiable so...

I think we all need to just like what we like and agree neither is superior, like you said.

Although I think we lament poorly written ones, because I think we've all come across that one happy/sad ending that make us think about how cheap it was before anything else.

We are in complete agreement here.
