In my fandom circles it was considered canon even. Never got anything out of it. Merry/Eowyn for the win!

In mine as well. It was always Frodo/Sam & Merry/Pippin.

Well, they specifically said AU fics, which weren't very popular in LOTR movie fandom.

I feel like Lord of the Rings is the kind of universe other fandoms use for their AUs. It's so fantastic that I think people might feel like "WELP, we've already got all this, can't possibly top it by dumping them all in a modern coffee shop". (this is total speculation)
