I honestly had the same reaction. I finally gave in and watched it because my brother (among other people, but mainly my brother) was obsessed and would talk about it non-stop when we were together. I found it incredibly slow at first but my brother claimed it got better so I kept going and actually thought it was pretty decent by the end of S1 of the new version. I adored Nine by that point, though, and couldn't really get into Ten, so I gave up after the beginning of S2 and haven't felt the desire to go back (especially since I know Moffat gets more involved as the show goes on and I've had enough of his fuckery with Sherlock). So I did end up liking S1 but overall I definitely don't understand the massive amounts of hype. Just not my thing, I guess.
