I can understand where you're coming from with that. It's one of those things that makes more sense in hindsight, but when you're stuck in a class with that one person who tries to turn every conversation into an opportunity to show off their amazing animu knowledge, it can get a bit annoying. I'm an anime fan, and even I have my moments of "please shut up now" when it comes to that, lol. Especially since those people tend to foster this idea that if you start studying Japanese because you like anime or Japanese media you're automatically an annoying weeaboo. Bad apples, man.

Have you looked around on LJ to see if there are any music comms? It you find a particular group or a few groups that you like, they might have a small fan following. Or you could also look and see if there are fandoms for English-language media in the language you're studying. It wouldn't be quite the same, but seeing English lyrics and what not translated into said language might be useful, too.
