esl pronunciation help!

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
so, how do you pronounce "subtly", "subtle", etc.? I keep hearing recordings online and it just doesn't sound like the spelling makes it seem like it should sound like

like, do you flip around the t and the b to pronounce it or what

help fs :(

Ignore the b. The b doesn't b-long. :)

The 'b' is silent. I've always heard it pronounced "suttle."

Trust the recordings. "Just doesn't sound like the spelling makes it seem like it should sound like" is something that English does annoyingly often.

"Suttle"/"suddle" (English isn't big on enunciating hard "t" sounds 99% of the time)

It's a French-derived pronunciation using a Latin-derived spelling because it's English and fuck logic.

For future reference, dictionary.com uses a colloquial pronunciation guide (instead of IPA), which might help for other confusing words we have c:

As I like to say, the French put the "b" in "subtle."

Except that in French we pronounce the b! Because French, that's why.
