Sad endings are okay until someone tries to say that are more realistic or whatever. Movies have to be interesting to watch, and the tediousness of grief isn't interesting. As long as movies and such can skip over the boring parts of pain (and they have to due to the media itself), they will never be more realistic than endings that ignore the sucky parts of a happy ending.

Even the way people die in sad endings isn't usually realistic. Most characters die in a way that connects with the plot, not from having an allergic reaction to shellfish halfway through the movie. Take Thelma and Louise - they didn't get a happily-ever-after ending, but the exhilarating ride off the cliff was much less realistic than giving themselves up to the police or dying in a shootout.
