Merry/Pippin fics are aplenty, but seriously the FPF side of LOTR fandom just Does Not Like AU fics mostly because the characters kind of stop making sense when they're not within Tolkien's world because Middle Earth is so incredibly rich and detail in culture and history. This is especially so for the entire Fellowship, plus if people want to want modern AU for them they tend to go straight to RPF. Like actual AUs instead of screwing around with Tolkien's canon are really, really rare in LotR fandom in general.
