I'm surprised at this, I would think most fanfic readers want happy endings. I can get enough sad endings in real life, or films and books. I don't read fanfics for it. In fact I would find it obnoxious a lot of the time, and feel I'd wasted my time reading the story.

I think some of the greatest literature has sad endings, but there are also greats with joyful/happy endings. See Jane Austen.
