Favorite song meanings

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you have any songs that you really love the meaning of? I know a lot of people get disappointed after figuring out (or being told) what a song means, but do you have any examples of really loving the meaning of a song/the meaning making you enjoy the song more?

Recorded by Capercallie,

Coisich, a Ruin

and Mile Marbhaisg (A Thousand Curses)

(The meanings aren't obscure, they just happen to be in Gaelic).

There's also this awesome song about the Americanization of France that also happens to be one of the sexiest songs I've ever heard:

Too many to count.

Leonard Cohen's stuff comes to mind, especially First We Take Manhattan, Everybody Knows, Waiting For the Miracle, Lover Lover Lover and Ain't No Cure For Love (well... pretty much any Cohen song, to think of it).

Placebo's Bright Lights because it's been inspiring me a lot lately. Hnnnng... The rest is a brain fart, I'm afraid - except maybe certain ditties by Amanda Palmer but I have doubts about mentioning her after recent shitstorms and also because I'm not sure a lot of people share the views I see in her songs.

Leonard Cohen yes!

Famous Blue Raincoat is #1 in that category for me though.

i can only think of really straightforward stuff

You Are My Sister - Antony and the Johnsons; beautiful song, beautiful layers of sentiment

The New Zero - Rasputina; it's more or less about having a childhood crush on the abominable snowman and how fucking adorable is that

Don't Try Suicide - Team Dresch

[tw: domestic abuse] He Hit Me (and it felt like a kiss) - The Crystals; while the original composition unfortunately makes it sound like it's romanticizing abuse, i like that it really tried to deliberately communicate the perspective of someone in a very bad situation, and i feel bad that it ended up twisted around

And just about everything by the dresden dolls
