Religious choral music question

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
So...I'm not particularly religious (not atheist, but it's not really a part of my life and I've never gone to church or done any religious stuff except a handful of times for family things) -- however, I've recently become utterly enthralled by some kinds of choral religious music. The symphony orchestra I play in recently performed Verdi's Four Sacred Pieces, which I found unbelievably beautiful and powerful and fascinating and really kickstarted this interest, but my tastes are picky and I really, really don't know any of the terminology needed to search for more of that kind of music in an intelligent informed way.

Does anyone have recommendations for similar music or can point me to some way of educating myself so I can put a name to the things I like?

You can search for Gregorian chants.

Things you might like:
Verdi - Requiem: Dies Irae
Mozart - Requiem in D minor, Dies Irae
Mozart - Ave Verum Corpus, K. 618

Ave Maria - Handel, Schubert, Bach

You'll find many classical pieces with names such as "Dies Irae", "Ave Maria", "Requiem", "Kyrie", "Stabat Mater", "Te Deum". The whole Requiem Mass in D minor by Mozart should be right up your alley.

Richard Einhorn's "Voices of Light" album KILLS IT. I first heard it as the soundtrack to 'The Passion of Joan of Arc', a 1928 film, and I get ~the tingles~ every time I listen.

search for "sacred music"? besides "gregorian chants", that's the term I see more often
