Experiences or knowledge that do not fit in the conventional narrative of life, specially those that have inherent power over us and we can't do much to change them.

This is pretty basic, and oftentimes doesn't even have to relate to the supernatural. Fear of strangers, of flying, of the dark, all can boil down to the fact that they leave us powerless when confronted by them, and autonomy is pretty important to humans. And that's the thing: it varies from person to person. There are a couple that are arguably universal, but different sensibilities to 'the unknown' doesn't disprove it.
