When you read or say "doing the dishes" - do you think of washing by hand or loading/unloading a dishwasher?

When you read or say "mowing the lawn" - do you think of a push lawnmower or a riding mower/tractor?

You kids and your euphemisms.

Right? In my day it was quite clear what "doing the dishes" meant, and it wasn't a phrase for polite company. Kids these days.

"Doing the dishes" is hand washing, "taking care of the dishes" could be either.

"Mowing the lawn" could be either, but I think of a push mower first.

Getting the dishes clean by any means and shortening the grass with a machine. I don't differentiate in my head because some dishes I wash by hand and others I put in the washer. We have also used both push and riding mowers at different points in time (although after one too many lawn mower accidents we hire the yard out).

Washing by hand, pushing a lawnmower.

Doing the dishes: well, I have to wash/clean the dishes first, then load them by hand into the dishwasher so that's what I think of. I don't think of unloading the dishwasher as doing the dishes although it can be part of it (unloading the washer, then doing the dishes).

As for mowing the lawn--I think of it as being mowed by hand, not a riding tractor. If you mean riding tractor, you need to mention it if it's a part of necessary scene--otherwise, I'd wonder when the tractor appeared.

Also, a push mower is a specific type of lawn mower; it doesn't have an engine/motor--it's not electric or powered by gas. It's powered by you.
http://www.wisegeek.net/what-is-a-push-mower.htm So when you say push mower that's what I think of.

"Doing the dishes" = washing them by hand

"Mowing the lawn" = push lawnmower
