SPN fandom wank/Biphobia

(Anonymous) 2013-05-07 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
So, there's some con wank going on now about a girl being booed for asking Jensen Ackles a question about being Bi/his character being Bi/etc. A lot of people now are crying "Biphobia!" because of Jensen's response, but really...I don't think so. They were told not to ask any shipping questions and that it wasn't okay to ask questions like that to Jensen, and to keep stuff like that for Misha.

I don't understand why it's okay to make someone feel uncomfortable, so long as they're straight? The guy is constantly harassed about being 'tehgayz' for his friend/co-star, despite them both being married+having kids with said wives. At this point I'm surprised he answers questions for his fans at all. And when you constantly have to defend your own sexuality because a large chunk of your fans want you to conform to their masturbatory fantasies....I'd probably pretend I didn't hear that question, too.

Firstly, he wasn't asked about being bi. He was asked about the fictional character he portrays being bi.

Secondly, the question wasn't about shipping. It was about Dean's sexuality.

Thirdly, he didn't seem that embarrassed or uncomfortable about the question. The girl, on the other hand, was downright humiliated by him and the crowd. Jensen egged the crowd on with his "really? the first question" shit when she was very polite, saying that she "meant no disrespect." Also, how would you feel if you admitted you were queer to a group of people, and they immediately started booing before you finished the question? You probably wouldn't because you seem to be straight.

Fourthly, lol he doesn't need to constantly defend his sexuality. Like what are you even talking about? There aren't tinhatters going to cons asking him if he wants to fuck Misha/Jared. They're usually people who are talking about Dean--who, like I said, is ~fictional~.

And lastly, wanting queer representation doesn't have to do with "masturbatory fantasies." Lots of people in the supernatural fandom are queer, and want to see positive queer representation. Maybe they identify with Dean! And let's be real: Supernatural is queerbaiting. They know some people in the fandom like to see the homoerotic subtext between Dean and Cas, so they add scenes that exploit that. If you want to argue that point, let me point out that one of the Supernatural writers on twitter talks about "destiel scenes" to get the fans riled up. He knows "destiel" isn't a platonic term.

Also, p.s. I can't stop laughing when people sob about these "poor actors" who have to answer "uncomfortable" questions. They're raking in the dough for these conventions. They make what some people make in a year for these conventions. And the worst thing that happens is that they have to answer an ~uncomfortable~ question about a character's sexuality. Give me a break.

Most slash fangirls are cis straight women who want to see two guys humping.

And I'm a lesbian who sometimes wants to see two guys humping. I fail to see your point.

Bi doesn't really count as queer unless the person is in a relationship with someone of the same sex. If you're Bi and dating someone of the opposite sex, and complaining about the struggles of being 'queer', then lolno.

Uh, wow.

People in heterosexual relationships do need to understand that they experience heterosexual privilege, and that it colors how the world perceives them. However, it does not by any means stop them from being queer, or stop them from being judged by their sexual preferences - especially not if they've previously been in same sex relationships.

They should keep that in mind when engaging with other people and discussion about queer issues, but just being in a heterosexual relationship doesn't cut away part of who they are.

To avoid getting queer-carded: I'm exclusively attracted to the same sex.

Here's her side of the story. Seems pretty reasonable about the whole thing to me, and she has a very positive attitude about the whole thing.

I also think her question was a shitty choice for the first question, but overall it wasn't an unreasonable thing to ask, especially as a queer fan. Just difficult in a public forum that's going to assume anything you say with the slightest hint of "homo" is going to get automatically labeled as "oh GOD more yaoi fangirls".

It also doesn't seem that Jensen was really being an ass about anything from her perspective, soooo.
