oh my gosh, I'm exactly the same. Share icons, tumblr graphics, fanart? SURE,!

Share writing? NO. But i WISH i was good and could write regularly.

I think everyone has that fear, even long after you posted your first fic. I know when I read back something I wrote even months ago I think to myself "DEAR GOD WHY."

LOL I feel you. Half a year ago I was learning a language that had completely different punctuation rules, and my punctuation turned into something about as comprehensible as melted cheese. Sometimes I cringe so hard when I look at my works written back then.

Oh, and my abundance of epithets.

I don't know which one I abuse more, commas or sentence fragments.

in some ways i think it might be because a lot of people are a lot harder on writers, and stuff that isn't so well written isn't as easy to enjoy

quick, messy art might not look polished but it can still be cute and visually appealing and nobody will really bat an eye

but writing? people get really harsh, really fast and let's be honest, are just a lot more particular unless it's something rare that they're willing to lower their usual standards for

yeah, I think you just hit the nail on the head

i know how you feel anon :) when i posted my first fic i was so fucking anxious. it was the worst. even now like 2 years later every time i post it is an exercise in anxiety lol. this is advice you might have heard a few times before but you should try out fic memes/kink memes. it's a good way to dip your toe in and not have to worry about anyone knowing who you are, if they will judge you, if somehow the shame of your HORRIBLE AWFUL FIC!! will follow you.

as an aside i personally tend to only write gen and never any sex but kink memes these days have lots of prompts to cater to that, if you are the same. good luck!

I love this comment. I was more excited than anxious when I posted my first, but seven years later, the anxiety has set in. Anon memes still make me a bit anxious, but I feel significantly less so than I would if I were posting under my name. They're a great way to ease into fandom if that's what you need to do.

And yeah, I'm the same re:kink memes. Fortunately, they aren't the only kind out there, or I would always be restricted to putting my name to everything I write.

Kushina icon. ;3;

Oh, yes, posting things anonymously or under a different name makes things quite a bit easier!

(Anonymous) 2013-05-07 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
You have a good grasp of English, and that's half the battle, you know. :) Even if I know nothing else about your stories, I'd rate you in the top half of fanfic writers just for that.

Same thing with me. It's only recently now that I have the drive to post fics and drabbles up, even if it's just in here.

As someone else who writes and draws, I feel the same way. I think it's because when it comes to art, I pretty much just draw what I feel like, but when it comes to writing, I put my heart and soul into conveying the characters and their world and struggles. But that's just me; I know it's the other way around for others. So I dunno. :/

(It could also be that my art sucks and I've given up on trying to actually get good at it a long time ago...)

I'm the opposite way. But for me, I'm an all right writer and a shitty artist, so I don't even TRY when I do art anymore because I know it'll be awful. :/

That said, writing and art are both easily criticized, but sometimes writing is more personal because a lot of writers (myself included) put a little bit of ourselves into our writing. In actual written words. That people can see. Even with fanfiction. So sometimes, having it be a little more...mmm...obvious maybe? Makes it a scary thing to let other people see. Like it might be more personal to you even though it's still fan-made shit.

I'm right the other way round. Still post both. Still am afraid. This is probably the best strategy. Everyone seems to be using it.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm like this too!

But maybe it's because I've been writing fic for way more time than drawing fanart, and I'm more confident in my writing skills than my drawing skills. (It doesn't help that my fandom is full with art students/professionals and my drawings look like they were done by a five year old)

But, OP you should try post it. Look at it this way: there's always someone who will like your work, and as with drawing, you need to do a lot of practice to get better at it.

Maybe that's because writing can be seen as more personal, bearing your soul, because wen you're actually writing a story people can use it to make opinions about you. I've often seen people who think that a character's opinion and a writer's opinion are interchangeable...it can be sort of weird like that.

I'm just the opposite. I post fic all the time with no problems, but I almost never post any of my art because I think it sucks too much. My writing always seems to turn out the way I want it after a few rounds of editing, but with my art I keep getting caught up in all the flaws and end up psyching myself out of posting anything.

Don't worry, I assure you there's worse fic out there. Just post and have fun.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-08 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
Man I have the exact opposite problem. I have little problem posting my awful fanfic online, but when it's fanart it's all raging insecurity. I barely post any fanart at all any more.

That said, it might be easier to start posting fic under a completely new and unaffiliated account.

Turn "fanfic" and "fanart" into "original fic" and "original art" and that's me.

Except I'm also uncomfortable with sharing my visual stuff. Just less so.

You know what? Since it sounds like you haven't written much, it probably WILL suck. But if you never write and get feedback, you'll never reach the point where you're good. Just like drawing.
