It always cracks me up that Jean-Luc has a perfect British accent but is supposed to be French. Given that an accent is one of the hardest things to cast off, language teaching methods must be greatly improved.

Wrong, it's entirely realistic. This is just another masterful aspect of Star Trek's perfectly-depicted future history. Clearly Britain conquered France sometime during the Eugenics Wars, and in the general devastation, French language and culture disappeared and were replaced by British norms. Obviously.

I can't believe that you would imply that anything in Star Trek is unrealistic, poorly-thought-out, or poorly researched. It's literally perfect in every way. Obviously they thought this through and it's just one more strand in the rich tapestry of Star Tre- bahahahahaha sorry I couldn't keep it up

Yeah, but...why not? It's fun to come up with random fanon that could theoretically work in canon, even though everyone knows the creators didn't come up with it. No one actually thinks the writers put that much thought into it.

Plus, it's not like anyone on the casting department really thought that his accent was French either. So they must've thought "bah, who cares?" And they were right, because not one fan with a smidgen of a sense of humor gives a flying fuck.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I do think it's fun and it's not something I have a major problem with. I don't have a problem with it not making sense or with people making up things that do make sense, although it can get a bit silly, especially if you take it too seriously.

(TBH my comment was way more over-the-top than I would have liked, because I was really afraid someone wouldn't perceive that I was joking and I wanted to avoid that...)

Actually, if you learn English in school in Europe, they will make a point of teaching you posh BBC English, not American English. At least they did when I was in high school. They most certainly would have done at the time that TNG was made...so yeah, that's basically how a Frenchman would get an English accent (if he was a good student).

Grammar, vocabulary, idiom and syntax can be improved but accents stick like krazyglue. The particular regional accent you're trying to learn isn't going to change your ability to warp your tongue to make it. Never met a Frenchman who sounded like a Brit, and I've traveled and lived places, so I've met my share.

Some people can. Actors often fake accents, though I agree French is generally a hard accent to get rid of.

Out of curiosity, have you seen the show in the actual NS pic? Because the star actress has pulled off a minimum of 3 accents (informal British, non-accented English, German, and possibly (?) Russian (not sure what Helena's supposed to be, but my best guess is Russian)) quite convincingly to the point that I'm not sure what her actual RL accent is.

Uh, I really don't think the writers actually intended for even a second to convince anyone that his accent was French. They probably just went "Who the fuck gives a shit about accents? This is Star Trek! People can live to be 137 and San Francisco is the capital of the world!"

THIS. And it's exactly why I love TNG so much. They made no apologies for having a French captain with a British accent and a German brother.
