Enigma of Amigara Fault: I'm Lame

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2013-05-07 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I read it, thanks to the yesterday secret, and now I'm too scared to sleep. Browsing f!s instead. I'll be a mess tomorrow.

I read it too because of yesterday's secret, and it's not that scary. Well, the last page was a little jarring but I've imagined worse things so I can't say it left me spooked.

Awww, thanks :) I have a cat of my own sleeping with me, so it's not very bad. But I start remembering the goddamn last panel the instance I try to doze off. Yeah, it's even funny, the grotesque "DRR DRR" and all, but funny in a bad way.

Still, the kittens made me smile.

That comic isn't half as fucked up as Gyo. Or Uzumaki. Or Tomie, Christ. I'm going to tell you the same thing I tell people regarding anything David Lapham does: Don't read that shit. You won't sleep.

Brr, thanks, not going to. I'm not into horror, it frightens the blazes out of me and doesn't bring any pleasure, none at all. And I know that; but then I encounter something, and I think: "wait, it can't be so bad as to scare you - you're an adult, and these are just words/pictures/sounds, nothing harmful!" And then it sucks me in. Like those holes.

I'm actually a big fan of horror, and can put up with quite a lot, but there's something about Ito and Lapham's work that is really off-putting. Like, "there's something wrong with him and he needs to be institutionalized to protect others" off-putting. Crossed was disturbing when Garth Ennis came up with it; David Lapham's take was unhinged even by the standards Ennis had set. Reading the 'Psychopath' miniseries was an endurance test that I really regret.

Most horror doesn't even phase me anymore. All that's left is the really screwed up shit, and that's just not as enjoyable.

I should note I refuse to watch Tetsuo the Iron Man alone for similar reasons.

Is it wrong that I find it adorable
(...yeah)

I get how it works with comics, manga and other stuff that contains visual components, but then it's not entirely my bailiwick. What I'd like to know is: are there books that are this degree of disturbing? Because that would be really interesting. So far I've considered literature a perfectly safe area, and I guess I would be... uncomfortable if that changed. But IDK what one would need to write in order to make their creation a piece of "screwed up shit". With books the shit is just never screwed up enough.

That's the one, yep. It's bad enough on its own, but even worse when you know about the disturbing reactions she got. Human nature is terrifying and Jackson was damn good at portraying it.

If there are, I haven't seen them yet.

"What I'd like to know is: are there books that are this degree of disturbing?"

I would offer Clive Barker's books as among the most disturbing things I've ever read. The description of the Magdalen in WeaveWorld was the straw that made me give up his writing entirely. The mental imagery completely nauseated me.

(I'm not into comics/graphic novels and I don't know if this Enigma of Amigara would bother me.)

I gotta read Tomie, but I don't dare read/watch Gyo. The concept is so ridiculous that it went all the way around and wound up scary again. Sort of, scared of dying ridiculously.

All mangas by Amigara creator Junji Ito, yes.

I dunno, if you're sleepy and not scared anymore, it might be better to have those two hours.
