Add a short author's note? That's what I've always done. Major Pairings: blank, blank. Minor Pairings: Blank, blank, blank.

Yeah, I had commented further down with that - save the tags for the major focus of the story, note int he summary or AN that there are mentions of the others.

Except then you have to deal with the people who get pissed that you didn't tag your background pairings, because now they can't filter out your fics while searching for it. -_- And surprisingly, these people exist. It takes all sorts, I suppose.

I tend to just say "fuck it!" and not really do anything about it. If readers are going to get up in arms about a pairings that's just being mentioned in the background and has little or no bearing on the story, then they probably don't even like the story itself so why bother pandering to them?

Personally, I tend to be irritated by people who assume that if a pairing is canon, you don't need to tag it. Like, people are allowed to dislike non-canon pairings but canon pairings are supposed to be universally liked? Don't get me wrong, I love most of the canon pairings (I love most pairings in general) but this attitude just irritates the hell out of me.

I meant in addition to tagging them, mention in your AN what's major and what's minor.

As for the last part, it seems the opposite to me in a lot of fandoms.

Like I said, it's just a no-win situation. Whether you put in notes or not, there are some who will get pissed if you DO have tags for minor or background pairings, and some who'll get pissed if you DON'T. So I tend to just not bother with it at all.

And really? I've seen a lot of fics that tag other background pairings but not if they're canon, or they're by authors who I know tag background/other stuff but not if it's canon. (But then, things like "Canon level violence" or "canon levels sexual assault" irritate me, too.)
