Well, he did sing "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" which is an incredibly creepy song.

It may come across as creepy now. Nobody saw anything wrong with it back in the day.

Of course, it wasn't always taken for granted that there's no possible reason an adult male could ever mention or take an interest in young girls (or boys) in any context whatsoever unless he's a pedophile. We've become a sadly paranoid, sex-obsessed society.

Nobody saw anything wrong with it back in the day.

Yeah, you know, there's a lot of things nobody saw anything wrong with back in the day that we have concerns about, if not laws against, today for very good reasons, so that's not a very good defense.

Besides, pedophilia is one of those things I feel it's better to have a healthy (i.e. not blind witch-hunting) paranoia about, right up there with fire safety and petting strange animals.

Nowadays it does, because we've come to reflexively view adult men with suspicion if they take any interest in little girls. This wasn't always the case, and he wasn't the only popular performer who sang that song.

Agreed, OP.

I'm not familiar with his work, but from childhood I've mostly associated him with Pepe LePew, who was apparently modeled after him. Since Pepe was always kind of a rapist/stalker (I didn't like that he wouldn't leave the cat alone, even as a kid) I can't think of Maurice as having positive connotations irl. Between that and the aforementioned pedo-flavored song, he's pretty much cemented forever in my mind as "that old French creeper."
