This question is about the ending, so massive spoilers for "The Twist" in the next comment.

So I just saw The Others for the first time and really enjoyed it, mostly because I already knew the ending so I saw it as more of a cool mystery film rather than a horror film (I usually won't touch horror with an ten-foot pole). Afterward I went looking for discussion online and pretty much only came up to TVTropes.

And here's my question: why does everyone seem to say that Grace was driven crazy by the presence of the servants' (Mrs Mills, Mr Tuttle, and Lydia) ghosts, leading her to kill her children and herself? I mean, I would understand if it had been explained that way (Grace, while intense and high-strung, still does not strike me as someone who would kill her own kids and commit suicide without some sort of catalyst, which I thought was because the previous servants left her alone locked in that dark house with her husband dead and her children an inch away from death all the time) in the movie, but I'm not seeing any of the "hints careful viewers would see" that suggest that Grace went mad from being haunted by those three.

If anything, Mrs. Mills, Mr. Tuttle and Lydia seemed to me like kindly neighborhood spirits who showed up to help ease them into living in this afterlife. I don't see when it shows that they haunted the house until Grace went suicidally, murderously crazy.

What am I missing here?
