Parp?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-09 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Allie posted on Hyperbole and a Half today and has a major post planned for tomorrow.

I feel bad that I had no idea that it hasn't updated.

Holy shit. Really? She's posting again? Thank you for letting me know.

Re: Parp? (warning: depression)

I used to check Hyperbole and a Half pretty frequent, and then there was that post where the whole point was that she woke up one day and didn't care, and it triggered me really badly, since I do that sometimes and more often than not it's a long downward circle that ends with me curled up and crying.

So I haven't been able to check and see if that's off the front page or at least the first post yet, since if it's not... well, there isn't much I can do to avoid seeing it.

Good to know I can peek through my fingers again!

That post is still on the front page so scroll carefully! If you don't want to look at the main page until that post is gone, there is a facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hyperbole-and-a-Half/103009646411654)that links directly to the individual posts. I think there is also a twitter account that autotweets when she posts but I don't know for certain.

SA - I'm an idiot. She has the link to her twitter account right on the blog.

AAAAAAAAAAHHH I love that woman. I've been checking every so often. Thanks anon! On a less flaily note, I'm glad she's... I guess, maybe not feeling better, but at least feeling up to engaging with her blog again and, you know, all the anxiety and social contact and putting-yourself-out-there that that entails.

PARP!

I SAW THAT EARLIER AND FLIPPED MY FUCKING SHIT ALL UP OVER THE PLACE.

I am so happy that she is back, no matter how briefly. Mostly I am happy that she is alive. I was really worried that maybe she had hit an incredibly low point and hurt herself. It's possible that she did, and that's what the post tomorrow will be about. If that's the case, I will be so sad.

But I've dealt with depression for ~8 years or so, and I know how it gets you. You have a really good day and think "Yes! It's all better now! I need to let my friends know that I'm going to be back to normal soon!" And then you wake up the next day and you're depressed again. You told everyone that you were feeling better, so now you feel obligated because of that too, and it's even more pressure. :/

Getting better is a process. A long, looooooong process. I still have days where I'm right back where I was 8 years ago, but those days are rare and getting rarer every day. I only hope that Allie Brosh is getting better too.

You know, given the speed of internet culture and all, I always wonder how the fuck HaaH manages to stay relevant. I was sick of it way before it went dead and the fact that people were still flailing over it after over a year without any new content kind of mystifies me.

Um... maybe because her posts are funny and honest and speak to a lot of people. Not just the latest one about depression, but also "Why I'll Never Be an Adult" and simple dog. And her humour is so off-the-wall but still so honest. She's not afraid to be vulnerable. And the whole X all the Y meme thing probably does a lot.

She's easy to relate to. Many of her blog posts are hyped up recreations of fairly common experiences. She uses herself and the people in her life as the characters without a smokescreen of "so-and-so is based partly on my third grade teacher and partly Han Solo." She shares parts of her life and therefore part of herself every time she posts. Many readers feel like they know her in some small way. Her depression post a year and a half ago worried a lot of people and instead of forgetting about Hyperbole and a Half, people worried about how Allie was doing. Yeah, it's great that she has posted again, but really what many people are happy about is knowing that Allie is still alive and learning how she's doing.
