When she was twelve, my sister ate paper. When I was twelve, I asked my babysitter, who was thirty years my senior, to marry me (incidentally we did date briefly after I turned nineteen, but then she had a heart attack and I got so upset that she refused to let me in the hospital room when her family was there that I dumped her). My current significant other burned cardboard boxes on the front lawn every night and got the cops called on his family when he was twelve. One of my friends liked giving herself bloody noses when she was twelve. We all do things as children that we cringe thinking about later on.

I went in after visiting hours (because I worked at that hospital) and she said she didn't want to her family to see me because I was so much younger, and we argued about it until she finally said that she was afraid her family would judge her, and I told her that if she was so ashamed of dating me, we should break up. So we did.

I feel kind of bad now that I have some perspective, but at the time, being told that my girlfriend was ashamed of being seen with me in public on top of being worried out of my mind first that she'd had a heart attack and then that I'd done something wrong because I wasn't allowed in really upset me and I told her that if she was so ashamed of me, we should stop seeing each other. We've had a few uncomfortable encounters at the DMV where she works, but other than that we haven't communicated for a while.
