Lack of skill

(Anonymous) 2013-05-10 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I just tried creating fanart. And then I remembered why I never do that. Protip: If you can't draw, don't use dwarves as your starting point for trying. The noses are huge and there is facial hair everywhere, but sadly not enough to conceal the entire face... XD

So I started wondering, f!s, what are you aweful at that you would like to be able to do?

There is nothing I do that I am full of awe at myself for doing. Sorry. :(

Sewing. I've taken lots of sewing classes but I always end up the worst in the class, and not for lack of trying. People have told me before that using a sewing machine is as easy as driving a car, which always makes me cringe because I gave up on learning to drive after over a decade of never getting past second gear and almost killing myself/others with the junker car I practiced with. I can't kill anyone with a sewing machine (at least I hope not!) Singing. I can carry a tune but my voice is squeaky and my range is probably less than an octave.

Did you ever try learning to drive on an automatic? They're a lot easier than manual.

Write. Art. Play an instrument.

In that order. Talent, I have none.

I'm very bad at dancing. The way some people can't carry a tune for singing, I have that for jigging around. When I tell people that clubbing is boring, it's only a half truth.

Also, singing too. I'm going to try and join a choir in the next few months for the vocal training that's included, so maybe I'll actually improve. (General music making with instruments and composition is also pretty terrible even if I do have fun dorking around with it).

And creative writing. I find it easy to whip some id-pleasing one-shots, but the quality is so bad. The people who like them are just there for the id factor first anyways orz

I'm the same way about dancing. Rhythm, I has none at all.

I really wish I could draw too. Just can't. Or paint, or any other kind of visual art. I make collages sometimes. Usually mainly with words. I'm pretty limited :\

Re: Lack of skill

Everything; stick figures are my limit in drawing; everything I write sounds like a 5 yrs old writing to me including essays, cover letters, etc.; and I hate myself for not improving/learning skills to use in the real world like excel and access, which are basically requirements at the jobs I keep looking at. I seem to have some sort of mental block against it. I will clean the house top to bottom, which I hate, before I even think about sitting down and working on those skills.

But most of all, it's my lack of skill in interviewing for jobs and I, guess, in interpersonal relations. Also, b/c I can't find a job, I'm looking to reactivate my manicurist license and I suck at polishing nails and I basically don't care about being a manicurist but if it pays part/all of my bills, I guess I'll be happy. So, I'm practicing that right now.

I wish I could dance, only because it's so socially unacceptable not to. I'd enjoy going to parties or out with my friends so much more if I didn't have to worry about being pressured to do something that I know I'm going to look stupid doing. And people just don't take no for an answer, so I wind up getting pulled onto the dance floor and having a miserable time, and then being blamed for bringing the mood down.

idk about you, but I find I'm most awkward with dancing when it's whatever passes for dancing these days, i.e. "we all stand around and sort of bounce and shimmy with our hands up" dancing. Actually, coordinated dancing with moves that follows a particular style (e.g. swing dancing) = way better. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a great dancer either way. But the experience sucks less that way.

playing guitar! I've been taking weekly lessons for 3 years now and I still suck. it's not that I don't practice. I should call it quits but I adore my teacher and don't know how to break it off lol.

I'm really disappointed because I love instruments. not to be braggy but I'm actually pretty darn good at clarinet (started younger, though), so I guess I expected I'd have an easier time of it.

Singing. I'd love to sing along all those emotional, powerful songs but instead I sing so bad I annoy even myself.

I`d love to be able to sing or draw. Sadly, I was raised in a family wherein all artistic or musical pursuits were considered worthless and actively discouraged (to make room for useful things, like math and sports!!) so while I can make little sketches that don`t look terrible and carry a tune if I really try, I`m so far behind the curve that I:d never catch up enough to be truly good at them.

And so, I write and translate -_-

I kind of want to do violence to anyone who denigrates the fine arts as "worthless," but pushes sports as something "useful." Playing a game is NOT more worthwhile or practical than creating something.

I'm sorry you were discouraged from pursuing art or music. :(

But sports make you tougher, and manlier, grr! Make good for health! Unlike weak, girly creativity, which is useless.

Yeah I will probably hold that against my dad forever. Even worse, my mother was a skilled painter and loved to sing, but he forbid her from ever teaching us to paint and would belittle and mock her every time she sang within earshot, telling her to knock off the horrible noise (it wasn't horrible at all).

SO SHOCKING THAT THEY'RE DIVORCED NOW HE WAS SUCH A CATCH.

Making stuff up, like stories. I can think of characters, and worldbuilding is fun, but a narrative? Plot? Just not happening.
