That's true, but nobody says that Doc had never had any friends apart from Marty. In fact, he was likely to had at least someone back in the thirties.

Besides, "being a black sheep" is a thick concept. It can mean a variety of things, from "the entire Hill Valley hates Doc" to "a couple of Marty's neighbours think that the old man is crazy, everyone else is chill about it but doesn't really want to be too close to Doc".

Say, I've read a well-written story where Doc was literally bullied by the local kids.

Me too. He just comes across as that weird guy who, even in school, never had any friends because they don't get him.

Yeah, it's been a while since I've seen this, but I didn't realize this was a fanon interpretation...

The novelization by George Gipe also seems to reflect this as early canon.

I don't know how idiotic it is because as far as I can remember Doc didn't seem to be close with anyone except Marty (and later Clara). He probably small talked with people, but there was no real indication of friends. Even his past self didn't seem to have friends as Marty was able to stay with him without an issue. If he had someone who regularly came to see him, then you'd think he'd put Marty up in a motel or something to avoid suspicion he'd say something about the future. Even in the old west people didn't really know that much about him. Partially from him keeping a low profile, but I think he'd always been a loner.

This is a good comment and you should feel good <3

I've seen fanfics where the author claims that Doc had friends besides Marty and that only Strickland thought he was a loon, so I see where you're coming from, OP. I think their relationship would lose something if it was revealed that Doc had many other friends anyway, because I always thought they were supposed to be practically polar opposites of each other who were real friends despite that.
