"Eeeeew, gay people."

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
yeah that's totally what this is saying

(Anonymous) 2013-05-10 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this is a repeat and I'm sure it's a troll but I'm gonna say it anyway.

Just because homosexuality was accepted in certain cultures (according to what little evidence has actually survived from those places and time periods; please keep in mind that many documents and works of art have been rewritten or completely destroyed), doesn't mean it didn't happen.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-10 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

It's the equivalent of thinking that the Victorians didn't have sex just because they (mostly) didn't talk explicitly about it.

ayrt

Except I meant to say *wasn't accepted in certain cultures, oops. I even read that comment a few a times before I posted it. :\

I assumed that's what you meant. Wouldn't have made sense any other way...

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
... and what was accepted isn't necessarily congruent with what appears in Fanfiction ...

... i.e., being someone's Beloved doesn't automatically mean engaging in buttsex, double-ended dildoes, or bondage hijinks.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Okay? I don't really see your point.

copy-pasta bullshit

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
not only is it a repeat, but i have seen this spammed around so many communities and tumblrs

(Anonymous) 2013-05-10 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it's not because homosexuality isn't accepted in a culture that it doesn't exist in said culture...

Compared to Naevia's "STRONG WOMYN/female empowerment" fantasy, are two gay characters really that unrealistic in context?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I will freely admit I do not pay a ton of attention when this show is on - it just seems like sex and blood and I enjoy both just fine, but after too much I get bored quickly. Anyway, from what I gathered... is two people in this show meeting up and fucking without deep meaning really... uncommon? I thought that happened rather frequently. Or are you holding these two, or the writers, to a higher standard than the other couples because they're gay?

This was on a failbar before, wasn't it?
Anyway, I imagine there is a whole lot about this show that isn't historically accurate. If DeKnight felt the need to have a couple on the show then good for him! I like gay dudes better than I like history, so.

-sighs- I replied last time it was in the failbar but...again.

The Roman 'acceptance' of it wasn't really what we'd think of acceptance today. Mainly because they viewed sexuality completely differently than we do today. Sex, like a lot of other things [iirc] was split between a 'masculine' role [which was viewed as being dominate, and in charge], and a feminine [which was viewed as being submissive]. Having a same sex relationship, if you were male, was only acceptable if you were the dominate, or "male", partner during sex. Being the receptive partner [or, rather, enjoying that role] was viewed as having a sickness*.

There also isn't a whole lot known about lesbians in ancient Rome, but what *is* known is that there were a lot of rather unflattering rumors ['They're insatiable', 'Their clits are over-sized and look like penises', 'They like penetrating young boys*'].

So no. Homosexuality wasn't acceptable in the sense that you probably mean it, it was just viewed very differently and - if you don't actually look into it - comes off as being far more accepting.

*Note, both of these indicate a whole 'Breaking your gender role' thing.

Hey you dumb fuck. The formed their bond over the brothers they lost. Did you even watch the show? There were looks passed between them, they were looking at each other, words shared etc. How was it a shock they got together? Clearly there were feelings there.
