12. [SPOILERS for The Borgias]
[WARNING for incest]

Ha, I only follow some Borgias comms for links to the show. I don't care about the ship. Not like it worked out IRL anyway.

I don't watch this series, but if the couple pictured are Cesare and Lucrezia, they might not be "canon" at all. There's been quite a few historians lately who say their purported relationship was made up by those against their family.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-10 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
That is true. We have no way of knowing whether their was a relationship between the two that was Incestuous or not. The two were close and that is all. It is also heavily speculated that cesare tried to kill Alfonso, which tends to cause questions. There is no way of knowing.

History may be iffy on whether or not it was canon (it prolly wasn't), but the show was like, 'HERE. HAVE SOME INCEST.' In the show-verse it is definitely canon.

It doesn't really bother me, but I do find it odd that Cesare and Lu will make out with each other while there are other people in the room. Oh, there's a tailor working on Cesare's shirt in the room? Time to make out. Papal guards in the armory five feet away from you? Make out session.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2013-05-10 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, you're right -- I read the secret more like "even though it's canon in real life (i.e. actually happened)", rather than "canon in the series itself". My bad!

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
The same folks who say Lucrezia was also sleeping with her father. Lucrezia sadly got the worst of it, but that is to be expected really.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-10 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I ship it. I think it is an interesting relationship and I would love to see the explore it with all the marriage alliances and the difficulties it places on them. I do find it rushed and Legit thought lucrezia was using cesare's passion for her to secure her son for a bit there, but I do want it explored, and I trust these writers not to fuck it up

(Anonymous) 2013-05-10 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
What d you mean by "canon"? Is this canon to the show or canon to history?

Either way, this ship is why I've been eyeing the show in Netflix. You know, 'cause I wanted to know how you write that while making it believable and interesting without just being appalling.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-10 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Canon to history, probably not. It was a rumor about a family everyone loved to hate.

Canon to the show, apparently -- I've only seen some of the first season, and thus far they're close but there's nothing inappropriate.

In the context of the show I don't think it would be very hard, because it is a back-stab-happy society in which they are not allowed to trust anyone outside the family. Any outside relationships are bargaining points and can be revoked at any time. Don't start liking someone, because they might try to kill you tomorrow, or you might have to kill them.

AYRT

Terrific point. I'm more curious now, because, honestly, in a world like that, it makes sense to make your brother your lover.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
The whole mess started after Lucretia's divorce from her first husband: while she was waiting for the annulment, she gave birth to a baby boy. (Incidentally, two of her servants, a man and a woman, where found dead in the Tiber shortly afterwards. There's some speculation the man might have been the baby daddy)

Remember, having an illegitimate child was not a huge deal if you were a man, but if you were a woman you'd be completely ruined.

The pope needed Lucretia to strenghten other alliances through marriages, so at first he claimed the boy was his son. Then it was "revealed" that the boy was actually Cesare's son.

Their enemies probably knew that Lucretia was the boy's mother, so they cheerfully used Cesare's "confession" to invent the whole incestuous relationship thing.

I liked the C/L stuff in the first two seasons, but I'm not loving how it's been done this season.

I just don't really care all that much about C/L. I care a billion times more about Vannozza and Caterina Sforza.

CATERINA SFORZAAA

is it bad that she's basically my favourite character? =/

(Anonymous) 2013-05-10 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Incest doesn't really bother me in shows, but as someone who was really looking forward to Lucrezias marriage to Alfonso, this made me stop watching. Lucrezia and Alfonso had a happy marriage and they loved each other and it gets so seldomly portrayed anywhere, so I was excited.
Couldn't they have waited with that till after his death? *throws hands up in the air*

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Considering it's rumored the show might not even get a 4th season, they probably couldn't wait. And if this is to be its last season then that happy marriage frankly sounds boring as shit. I'd okay with it if I were assured of more seasons to come though.

Yeah, I kinda agree.

I was looking forward to seeing Lucrezia be somewhat happy with Alfonso.

And then the show could have gone the route of showing that Cesare killed Alfonso and it could have been due to jealousy so we still could have gotten some incestual tension there.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
+1 I haven't even bothered to watch this season given the route they seem to be going. Quite a pity as I was also looking forward to the path they would need to take Cesare this season. Finally free of the Church and leading to the path of killing his sister's husband. Alas.

While I love their relationship, I far more enjoyed the creepy-closeness than actually acting on it.

Fandom is dumb because they're not judgemental cunts who think adult people aren't allowed to have fucked up relationships if they want to? Okay then.

IDC about fictional incest, honestly, especially if the parties in question are close in age.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 07:13 am (UTC)(link)
I ship it. I ship it a lot. I also realize how incredibly fucked-up it is and the few C/L shippers I've interacted with are the same.

I don't doubt that there are shippers who think they're ~perfect and lovely and there's nothing wrong about it~ but not all of us believe that. Some of us like it BECAUSE it's fucked-up.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
Is it even canon now? It looks like at least Cesare is treating their actual sleeping together as a mistake.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-11 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I totally believe that's going to stick.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-12 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
The whole point is that it is seriously fucked up. It's meant to be a dark ship. The are ruined for other people. Nobody will ever match what they have with each other and it will rob them both of any normal happiness. It's not stupid to ship it. It is kind of depressing, especially knowing the historical way it will end, but not stupid.
