I'm taking French in college now and can I just say that it's super hard to learn? But then I can read your conversation all right. So then I feel less stupid. But I freeze on exams and oral interviews. Dx

You can! It is, we have lots and lots of rules that contradict each other and exceptions to those rules. But it's great that you understood everything! Don't be afraid, practice makes perfect! You can read books/watch films and shows to build your confidence and vocabulary. Good luck! I know it's not easy to learn another language, but you'll get there!

Oh, I hear ya. I was nervous as hell about my oral French exam because I have to read lips and wouldn't you know it, we had a partial from audiotape. :(

It's really normal to have a way better passive understanding than active language. The only thing that really helps gain security is speaking/writing. :) Maybe get a French penpal? I think there are sites that specifically match two native speakers learning each others' language.

Je parle francais aussi - et je ne pouvais rien comprendre dans le secret original. Quelle horrible utilisation d'une langue!

Je ne parle pas francais -- mais je lee un peu, et je comprende moyen francais et francais ancien (parceque je suis une medieviste [medievaliste?])....and with my confused and frankly rubbish French I couldn't understand those sentences.

...I'll just wander away before my brain gets fully confused with my minimal Spanish and my poor Latin and I end up writing something that looks like Esperanto.
