...But you could say that about a lot of things. Dirt, for example! I mean, hell, dirt will be around long after the water's gone. Or is that not purply and obtuse enough for these people? Why not say "As faithful as dirt!" "As permanent as a glitter spill!" "As secure as epoxy!" "As long-lasting as an LED bulb!"

I could go on, but I work at a hardware store, so I think these will just get more and more obscure...

The sea's pretty and poetic and blue and dirt isn't. It's just there. It's also walked on and, well, common, while a lot of people never see the sea in person unless they travel to go see it. That's why the expression "as common as dirt", which is also brown, and well, not all that pretty in itself.

People only think dirt is boring because they don't know enough about dirt. :/ It is an endless line of sad in my life.
