...In fairness, the 'Lock' in the name smush crossovers are 99.9% of the time the BBC Sherlock version, so being in the 1800's wouldn't actually be an issue, and you could make a decent crossover with it between just one of the other two - mainly because [as I understand it] most people in those universes don't know about the majority that goes on in Who and Supernatural. So, it would be fairly easy to apply the rules from Who/Supernatural and still have it work as long as the characters from Sherlock aren't being introduced as having already known about it.

The problem with crossing the three is that Who and Supernatural both have 'rules' in their universes that just don't play well with each other. For example, the Dr. has been around for so long he would have to have known about the elements at work in Supernatural on some level, and if it's Who universe, why would Earth be what the forces in Supernatural be focusing on? The Time Lord's are the group who 'seeded' the humans [iirc that is], so there'd be no reason for 'God' - or anyone in Supernatural really - to focus on Earth. And that's before you even get into more of the details.

That said...it's rare, but there are some fandoms that actually are fairly easy to cross over with most things - but that's because they're rules are relatively common, and they have a way that would make it canonly possible for them to reach places where the rules they're used to change to some degree.

tl;dr: I agree mostly, but being the different genres isn't really what kills cross-overs so much has having completely different universe rules.
