What is NieR?

It's a PS3 game made by Cavia on an unfortunately small budget, published by Squeenix. You play the role of a father trying to make a living for himself and his daughter in a ~dying world, searching for a cure to her illness, and clawing your way through monsters called "Shades" as you end up thrown into the center of a conflict that moves you closer to finding out the Truth about what's going on behind the scenes.

Much of the substance of the game is pushed into character interaction and optional side-quests, and its biggest claim to fame tends to be its soundtrack (like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0x0-EYfwP-c)

As another anon who was going to mention NieR, without spoiling anything, it's one of those games you have to play more than once to get the whole story (you do get a fairly complete story if you only want to play it once, of course, but the ending will leave you feeling like you are missing something... not enough to make it feel pointless, but enough to raise curiosity). It has a New Game Plus kind of deal going on that let's you see things you didn't the first time around.

also, in case the user above happens to be a console gamer (or to anyone else potentially intimidated/put-off by NG+ replays), it's worth noting that subsequent replays occur from a half-way point through the game, and playing back through the ending is incredibly quick

it's already a remarkably small game, but once you know what you're doing and have a higher level from the get-go, it really takes no time at all
