I always figured this was just a universe without effective methods of birth control and thus the only way to get out of childbirth was to be sterile, gay, or celibate.

Even without the pill and latex there are always ways. Herbs and sheep bladders may not be as reliable as the pharmaceutical stuff, but contraception being as old as the hills, there are probably ways that won't come up in a kids' show.
