Re. 12 by OP
(Anonymous) 2007-09-19 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)I have a lot of RL friends who played the game when they were kids and have this nostalgia factor going on... they get kind of territorial over it. They just kind of laugh at me or look down on me 'cause I got in through AC, which they think sucks, and there's also the fact that they know I'm a slash fan and suspect me of thinking about gaying up their favorite characters.

I promise, if you're not being a flippant asshole about the original game (and in some cases the FILM) like a few secretposters here, no one wants to eat you alive. In fact, you seem like a really nice person <3
For what it's worth, the game is pretty easy, and I hope you can finish it soon, because there's just so much you miss out on by not playing it. And while you are completely entitled to your own opinions, maybe it'll also shed some light on why the overall style of Compilation is a little weird to some of us.
Good luck!

(Anonymous) 2007-09-20 04:28 am (UTC)(link)A friend did explain to me why he disliked Advent Children. He thought the ending of the game was perfect; he had always loved it. Since I don't really have that whole nostalgia thing with this game, I don't think it'll affect me the same way. But yeah, I have read some things about canon bits that have been speared by the Compilation, and I can definitely see the WTFness of some of it.
(I actually bought myself Crisis Core, and I've been putting in a little time here and there simply because I'm too excited to wait until I've finished original FF7, and I'm really enjoying it except augh, Gackt, why are you THERE. I like Gackt's music and he has an enjoyable brand of crazy and all, but it just completely kicks you out of the zone when you're playing and then, oh, it's Gackt...)
Re: Re. 12 by OP
The thing that REALLY kills me about Gackt is that the whole game PLUS AC were like, here's the most powerful man in the world and he's seriously badass no one is better than him----OH WAIT except this guy he's even cooler.
That don't sit right =\
Here's the thing about Compilation, though. I'm sure that a minuscule part of my disdain is nostalgia, but truly? From an objective standpoint, Compilation is truly an oversimplication (while at times complicating uncomplicated things) and just plain wrong about certain aspects of the game. Sure, there is a lot in the original game that Compilation does not contradict but someone viewing only Comp. would miss out on, but beyond that there are serious errors in basic things like archetypal characterization.
Take Reno for example:
It's not just that people who view only Comp. won't see his badass, drunken, married-to-the-job behavior, it's that what's presented esp. in Advent Children DIDN'T EXIST. Not only did it not exist, but unless he had a lobotomy in that two-year difference there is no way his original character would have ever developed into what he "becomes".
You could argue it's a subjective matter, but the extremes are just that: extreme.
