I actually had a fellow noob playing with me for awhile, when we were in college together, but we only played an hour or two every week. She got a handle of the whole turn-based thing really quickly, and eventually moved on to other FF games. Now I'm out of school, minus my buddy, and just kind of holding the controller going "omg materia gah." XD I get it, I just don't get it as well as I should, I think.

I honestly don't know how people can enjoy AC without knowing any of the background, though. My friend and I were like "okay, let's watch this, it looks really cool and I've heard good things," and we were like "wow, this is pretty, but... what the FUCK is going on!?" That's how we got into the fandom, by researching it online... and pretty much reading all the good fic there was to be had. I'm not going to feel like I can call myself a real fan until I get to the end of that game.

Well, it is slightly tougher than a lot of more recent games (like the ones that give you Auto-Life3 at the already ridiculously easy last boss fight *sigh*), but hell, that's the beauty of RPGs. When in doubt, levelbuild, levelbuild, levelbuild.

Really, it's just confusing when people run around loving AC but never having played the game and never intending to, simply because it's such a good game. It's like hearing someone say, "I've never tried chocolate, but man, I love carob!" You just can't help but want to guide them in the right direction.

FF7, hard? Back in my day, you lost money when you ran away from monsters! And then you didn't have enough money to get better equipment, so you had to run away from MORE monsters! And we liked it! *cough* *hack* *hobbles away on cane*

I did get really frustrated with the random battles, but maybe if I just change my attitude and look at it more as a tool for levelbuilding, I won't be so annoyed by them.

FF7 is a hard for me mostly because I can't get a hang of the turn-based gaming. I'm a Guild Wars player, I'm used to running up to things and stabbing them. The turn-based thing was/is the biggest hurdle for me to overcome.

Best strategy? Get one person using Restore and link an All to it, and just beat the shit out of everything with swords. No need for any of that other crap.

*smacks forehead* Why didn't I ever think of that? The only thing I did with All was link it to the enemy skill capture materia (whatever it was called) and give it to Red XIII... he shot missiles out of his butt. It was amazing, and it worked really well for a... missile-butt attack.

Also yeah, there's totally no need to get that involved in the game, materia-wise. I'm pretty heavy into videogames, but even I never play it with more than minimalist materia. Just make sure you have a decently balanced party with the newest weapons, and beat the shit out of everything.
