Personally, I think fandoms should exist for people who enjoyed a work of fiction to discuss and elaborate that work of fiction. Having people in a fandom who aren't familiar with the source material - having a huge portion of a fandom who isn't familiar with the source material - makes absolutely no sense to me.
But you know, even the biggest FFVII original game diehards don't go around finding and crucifying people who haven't played it. God knows there are a million people who did play the game who only run around the fandom talking about how pretty X character is. The only times it's really visible who hasn't played the game and who has is when people start writing fanfiction or theories or the like. I mean, it's not like the finer details of the game really come up in the everyday discussion of it.
