[Lost in Austen]

I'm pretty sure we all had this conversation a week or two ago over another secret, but yes, this is not an unpopular opinion, anon, no worries.

This program was an abomination.

Yeeahh I agree. I mean, I had friends who absolutely adored it, but it felt kind of self-inserty (at least, from what I recall, I saw it when it came out and not again since), and not in a fun way. Plus, while I love Pride and Prejudice and I love Mr. Darcy, I don't love Pride and Prejudice because I want to fuck/marry Mr. Darcy.

It's okay. It's hard to explain any general like for Pride and Prejudice (or it's related parodies and whatever) without folk assuming your cloner is for Mr. Darcy rather than the Bennet sisters :/

(Anonymous) 2013-05-15 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Why can't I use my cloner on both of them?

You may, but detection systems seem to only acknowledge and classify all incoming cloners as MR-D threats.

Sometimes I wish I could just tell people that I don't want Mr. Darcy, I want to be Mr. Darcy. To awkward too though.

I like this show idgaf. Of course it helps that I love Jemima Rooper. I do think she was a total Mary Sue tho. A lovely one imo.

I thought the show was terrible because it was horribly written...not that I saw all of it, as I gave up a couple of eps in.

Eh, try being an Austen fan who raves about all the social commentary and has favourites amongst the cardboardy secondary characters. (Mrs Bennett and Mr Collins are my supreme faves. Cringe-inducingly flat! I love it.) Seriously, I'm always subjected to, "Oh, well, I don't like her because I'm interesting and like things that are better than mere romances." Faugh.

Oh, wow, I sound bitter. It's probably because I am bitter.

Considering they missed the whole point of Austen, I'd just laugh at their pretentiousness behind their back.
Or try and imagine what characters they would have been in an Austen novel: you know Jane would have been merciless ;-)

Hardly an unknown opinion, OP. :P

About the only approaching-modern adaptation/sequel of Pride and Prejudice I've ever liked was The Lizzie Bennet Diaries.

I'm an Austen fan who avidly dislikes Darcy. It can get pretty lonely.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-15 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, me too!

(Anonymous) 2013-05-16 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? As an Austen fan myself, I'm curious-- why do you guys hate Darcy? Is it the obvious things he states himself-- "I've been a selfish being all my life, etc"-- or something deeper?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-16 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it too late to reply to this, as DA and everything? So, obviously I can't speak for the anons above, but in an essay collection called "A Truth Universally Acknowledged: 33 Reasons Why We Can't Stop Reading Jane Austen*" one of the writers (I forget which one, sorry) calls Darcy "a trust-fund brat". Now, I'm moderately fond of the man myself, but that seemed apt to me. Plus, it made me clap my little hands with pure glee, because it's so rare to hear anyone speak ill of the dear boy: it felt quite refreshing.

People keep reccing this show to me when they hear I liked P&P but it just sounds like a giant steaming pile of Mary Sue-flavored crap. IS there a point to watching it if you're not interested in a self-insert OC?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-15 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
I'd rather watch it than any of the other adaptations tbh.
