The thing I don't get about this(not an attack, I honestly don't understand it):

If it's so far removed from the source material that - if no names were given - nobody would recognise it as a Sherlock Holmes adaption, why the hell would you try to sell it as a Sherlock Holmes adaption? (Other than the obvious "Because it sells")

That's the same thing that bothers me about AU fanfiction where the only thing to connect them to the original fandom is the names of the characters. I just don't see the reason behind it.

That's a fair question. For me, personally, it's still "Holmes" enough, but I can see how others would disagree.
