I don't get it. Is this person smoking because John Green made them cry? What is going on here.

I think it's supposed to be about The Fault in Our Stars. The two principal characters are a girl with lung cancer (Hazel) and a boy who's in remission, but still had to have his leg amputated to cancer (Augustus 'Gus').

They meet at a cancer support group, and Hazel basically catches him outside with a pack of smokes. She rants at him for supporting the cigarette industry, giving them money to give more people cancer via smoking, etc. He just smiles and says that it's a metaphor. He buys the packs of cigarettes, but never lights them, because he says he has the power over them in not lighting them and giving in to smoking cigarettes...? It's kind of long-winded and I kind of raised my eyebrows reading it.

I mean, what's the point in that. Spending money on packaged cigarettes when you aren't going to use them is just so silly... aren't the cigarette companies just going to be like: "Yeah, uh, you're still spending money on them, regardless of whether or not you're lighting them, metaphor boy."

My daughter's making me read this book right now. He's had one pack for over a year, since he doesn't smoke them, so...he's not really giving them much money.

Ah, okay, the just having one pack slipped my mind. I was one of the people who got the book early, so it's been well over a year for me.
