wall of text, sorry
I sort of hide my power level too, but I don't mind talking about things I really love in public with people who know what I'm talking about. It's when they don't know what you're talking about that things get awkward, because it's impossible to have a conversation. It's not because the "nerdy" things you like are bad, just obscure to most people. I don't really have any good advice for finding friends IRL who share you interests aside from maybe using the internet to your advantage and going to cons and trying to hook up with the normal people you find there (who are kind of hard to find but they're there -- 18+ cons are good for this in my experience). Or maybe slowly and adeptly exposing some of your non-fandom friends to fandom. If you have a really good friend and they are confused because they know nothing about the shows you watch, maybe offer to watch something with them? I mean, don't force them, but maybe one day if you have nothing else to do ask if they want to. You'd be surprised. I've been able to watch Kamen Rider Black and Heavy Metal L-GAIM with just about everyone I know here and most of them aren't anime or toku fans whatsoever, and they enjoyed these shows. It helps to go into it with a sense of humor so you don't get all offended if people enjoy stuff on a different level than you do (nobody ever knows WTF is going on L-GAIM but still manage to enjoy it anyway?)
Finally, for whatever reason, most 80s mecha anime fans I find online would probably be branded as "hipsters" irl
