Re: It's not the issues that are the problem

please stop talking

if a white woman is mugged by a black man, is it okay for them to hate and fear all black people? no. does it happen? yes. is it part of a larger social and economic issue? also yes. but saying 'oh no I totally get why they'd think that way - gosh black people couldn't you have come up with a nicer way to broach interacting with this white person?' is so fucking...

just... stop

Nope. Never said that. In fact, I'm pretty sure I just said that my example transphobic blogger doesn't get a free pass to be transphobic because of what happened. If your proverbial white woman starts making racist jokes and perpetuating racist stereotypes, then damn right I'm going to tell her to knock it off. But if a lot of black people start harassing her and threatening her, then I'm going to be telling them to back off, too.

It sucks that so many of us grew up surrounded by hatred and vitriol and marginalization, but there's nothing we can do about what's already happened. You know what we can do? Make sure our kids, our little brothers and sisters, and our descendents don't have to deal with the same shit that we did. The ends don't justify the means, but neither do the means justify the ends.

Maybe I'm a cold-hearted bigot for saying this, but I am far more interested in stopping future bigotry than getting justice for the bigotry that has already happened and can't be erased just by yelling about it.

how the fuck do you think future bigotry~ is stopped if not by addressing past and present issues?

and it's fucking easy to be concerned with ~the future of our children~ but too hard and messy to be concerned with the issues we are currently facing today. I'll just stop caring about being abused and assaulted so that my children's children will magically be free of it since that's how social justice works. oh wait.

god you are so privileged and arrogant and willfully obtuse

Addressing past and present issues is saying, "Hey, that joke you made was offensive. This is why [insert explanation here]. I know it seems like a small thing, but it's really hurtful [insert supplemental explanation. (Please) Don't do it again."

It is not, "FUCK YOU, YOU TRANSPHOBIC ASSHOLE, I HOPE YOU AND EVERYONE YOU LOVE DIE A SLOW AND PAINFUL DEATH!" That doesn't address jack shit.

If I'm privileged, then what are you, exactly, considering you are apparently able to ignore the welbeing of those around you and those in situations marginally similar to your own for the sake of making yourself ~feel better~ and satisfying your mindless raging lust for the blood of the people who are probably open to equality but genuinely don't realize that they are perpetuating the exact opposite? It must be nice to look at all the minorities surrounding an online persona in real life and saying "FUCK YOU!" to them by attacking this one person online until they hate anything to do with social justice. Really, that accomplishes so much progress.

man you are dense. If a white woman gets mugged by a black man, sure, there's a chance she's going to veer toward being racist. Is it okay? NO. Can we see understand how she got there? Yes! Understanding =/= supporting. The woman has the problem and needs to change, but when she's been victimized people aren't always rational.
