I think it's also my seething hatred for suburbs and yes, I know that satellite cities and suburbs aren't completely white but they lack the diversity of cities and well, there's no other way to put it other than "white flight". I get so annoyed when WASPy co-workers try to justify the fact that they commute an hour to work every day from outside the city as "well the property is cheaper out there". A) It isn't, they just can't live in "certain" neighborhoods and B) can't deal with living in a smaller house or apartment. It's not just white people, I mean, my cousin-in-law does this and when we had Christmas at her house last year I felt physically ill being in her house because it was just so unnecessarily HUGE, with huge ceilings for no reason, and it had this feeling of being too empty. I guess this is why Americans buy so much crap they don't need, to fill up huge empty houses they don't need.
