Wrong way to make friends on Tumblr?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-17 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Help me, FS.

I thought one way to make friends on Tumblr was to send a message when a person you know posts something interesting/I like/agree with. I'll send them a message ("Hey, I liked that thing too!"), they'd answer ("yay, let's be friends!) and then maybe we could be friends?

Except I sent the message and they never answered me back (although they answered a couple people about the same post). I'm quite confused about this, because they were complaining they didn't know anyone who shared their tastes and I was messaging them telling them I was more than happy to talk about that topic if they wanted to, because I share the same tastes. Said person hasn't answered a couple comments on the past, but never a PM before.

*sigh* IDK. Maybe it's because human interaction has always been a mistery to me, but I truly don't know if I'm doing something wrong (and if I am, why is that person following me?! So confusing)

Tumblr has a nasty habit of deleting asks. Most of my friends on tumblr are people I met elsewhere (LJ, f!s, or RL), and the rest are just... people I follow/sometimes mututal followers, who I might occasionally say things to. You might have better luck de-anoning on f!s and talking to people you think are interesting, and then exchanging tumblrs.

tumblr eats asks incredibly often, i once had to send a message to a friend about 3 times before they got it.

just try again! if they answered other people's it wouldn't hurt.

Thirding the infamy of the messaging system of tumblr

Try reblogging one of their posts (one that doesn't have tons of notes so they're more likely to see that you reblogged) with a message like

Hey, I like that too also you seem cool wanna be friends?

And then like, drop them a throw-away e-mail or something so that they e-mail you so you have their address and then you can e-mail them from a real e-mail and be bffs or something
