Yeah? They're required for bubbling in scantrons.

Also, it's hard(er) to erase pen when sketching.

Yes. I find pencils a nicer feeling to write with plus I can erase mistakes! What do you use to write with?

I think the accepted "standard" is index and middle on top, thumb on the bottom, ring finger bracing the side. But given various individual preferences and physical differences, the "best" way to hold your own pencil is the way that is most comfortable for you.

I hold mine by my index and thumb, braced against my middle finger. I also grip it way too tight and end up cramping my hand if I have to write anything more than a few sentences, especially if it's supposed to be legible to somebody other than myself. Which is why one of my pet peeves about college was the insistence of hand-written tests. Fuck you old-fashioned assholes in the ear.

I used the first method and wind up with a callus on the ring finger if I write too often.
