I do this with busy streets with crosswalk, but without traffic lights. I usually wait until 1) the cars are gone like you; 2) somebody else arrives who wants to cross the street and I can tag along; 3) there's too many cars and they have to stop.
I have an excuse though, I've grown up in a village with only six and a half streets.
