Misunderstood Fandom Abbreviations

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Just like the title says, what do people in your fandom say that makes you do a double take. For me here it's f!s and b!s, which I can't help reading as fucks sake and bullshit. Reading secrets can be a fun experience with that in my head.
Anyone else have anything like this?

Initially, I thought DA and NA were people agreeing and disagreeing with things. I later discovered that wasn't the case.

FTW does not translate as anything except "FTW" in my brain. The proper feeling behind it is there, but it still just sounds like "Fff-T'Www".

I have the same problem with SJW. My brain registers it as "ess-jwww" rather than an acronym for anything, even though I know exactly what it means.

Re: Misunderstood Fandom Abbreviations

I always read it as "Fuck The What" instead of "For the win"

That's me exactly. In my head I always say "fuh-tuh-wuh."

It means For the Wolf.

okay this isn't me, but apparently Aaron Tveit thought that E/R in the Les Mis fandom meant "Enjolras/Revolution" (somehow idk) when of course it actually means "Enjolras/Grantaire" lol

Re: Misunderstood Fandom Abbreviations

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
I am not in the Les Mis fandom and have only seen a stage production a long time ago, so forgive my ignorance--What was E/G taken by?

Re: Misunderstood Fandom Abbreviations

(Anonymous) 2013-05-18 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think E/G was taken, but in the book Grantaire signs things as R (as his name sounds like 'capital R' in French).

I used to think "MSR" in the X-Files fandom (which stands for Mulder/Scully Romance) actually stood for Mulder/Scully/Reyes.

So screw me, I wasn't very involved in the fandom, I just encountered it through osmosis.

The anime Mawaru Penguindrum has a character known only as the "Princess of the Crystal." When it was airing, people in some forum discussions started calling her the "POC." Which is legitimate, but I kept reading the other meaning.

I actually submitted a secret about this very thing the other day. Stay tuned next week for a fascinating account of what my brain wants "GOT" to mean.

SPN always looks like ESPN to me

When people abbreviate Teen Wolf as TW I read it as Trigger Warning

And at first every time someone wrote SJ I thought they meant Shonen Jump instead of Social Justice

TW as Trigger Warning

I do that all the time and end up skipping posts thinking that they are just some sort of social commentary.

I couldn't figure out on comms and stuff what SPN meant for the longest time.

Not very fandom related - I didn't know what GPOY was for the longest time. Before I found out, i was torn between 'great post of yours' and 'greatest picture of the year' (yeah I don't get my brain either).

Also, GoW is usually used for Gears of War but I will almost always confuse it for God of War.... Yeah.

Honestly though, has anyone figured out GPOY on their own?

... I don't even know what it means after thinking about it for a while. So, no.

I figured out that it meant something about the blogger or their life, but never would have figured out the abbreviation.

Re: Misunderstood Fandom Abbreviations

I had to look it up to figure it out, since my friends on Twitter use it sometimes. I sort of have to take the actual meaning/sentiment at face value because if I start thinking about the actual phrase it stands for, my brain starts hurting.

Which means that I'm pretty sure my brain has connected the sound/word "gpoy" (pronoucned like "gee-poi" in my head) to mean "omg this is me."

Whenever I run across AVPM, my brain always goes "Alien Versus Predator" and then flails around for about a second for what the M could stand for before remembering that it's A Very Potter Musical. (Madness? Midnight? Malarkey?)

Back when this comm was flooded with Avatar secrets a couple years ago, I read those secrets (not very carefully, obviously) to find out what the hell it was all about... and ended up believing for a really long time that Zutara and Kataang were the main characters.
