Yes, but the character, Khan Noonien Singh, wasn't white. Which, considering his backstory and the context of the show, was a big fucking deal. Casting problems of the 1960s aside, it was still an important statement re eugenics and race.

ikr? John Wayne also played Genghis Khan. HE WAS WHITE, OMW. That wouldn't forgive a modern adaptation making a similar (lbr, worse) mistake.
