Well, to Brit-educated citizens, tattling is merely 'to tell on someone', although this is usually discouraged if you use it to gloat and tell on people for inconsequential mistakes.

Definitely different experiences for different folks.

Not just Brit. I've heard it plenty in Canada and this is the first time I've ever seen anyone confused by the word 'tattle.'

I'm from the US and the only time I've heard it is like the person above said, in an elementary school setting.

nayrt but I don't think anyone's confused by it. I just haven't heard anyone use it since I was in like 3rd grade. In the US, at least in my experience, it's only used by or about schoolkids telling on other schoolkids for, like, eating candy in class or something. It's something that sounds really childish to my ear, and it's really incongruous to hear someone using it seriously about serious, adult situations.

I associate the same connotations with the word tattling. If someone told me an adult had tattled on another adult, I would assume it was for something childish, silly, or immature.
