Is it because he's a Republican?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-05-20 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Because that's the only way I understand how anyone could see him as a "self-centered douchebag".

I can get being sick of the way fans worship him, really - he can do wrong and he isn't a perfect human being, no one is - but the man himself is pretty nice.

For the most part, he's friendly to fans he meets in real life, he's gone through a lot of tough times and come out ahead, and he's using his clout with Marvel to try and make sure his co-workers are better paid for their work in the movies. As other people have mentioned, he isn't perfect, he's said and done stupid things, but overall, how is he a self-centered douchebag?

And if it is because he's Republican, he isn't exactly a die-hard one. I'm pretty sure he's a Republican for Obama (though I don't know if he's officially part of the group, or just someone who happens to be a Republican and who happens to support Obama). He even shelled out for a major fundraiser in one of the previous elections - not exactly your self-centered GOP/Tea Party asshole type.

Where does the Repbulican thing even come from? I remember googling for it a couple years ago and could never find anything other than people saying he was one, but never any official source or anything. I know he supported Obama pretty heavily, and every comment I've heard/seen/read from him that's at all politics-related has seemed pretty liberal to me.

He has conservative views regarding the prison system and drugs, I think. I think he said it was because he thinks they were too soft on him in the past and he'd have gotten his shit together better if he'd been more scared of jail.

I'm not sure RDJ is formally a part of any political group. On one hand, he apparently self-identifies as a conservative and said at some point that his prison experiences have made him very conservative. On the other hand, he supported Obama and his social attitudes seem to lean towards very liberal.

I'm not surprised by this. If he's a mild Republican or even a moderate one, then it makes perfect sense that he'd support Obama and other Democrats (just Google 'Republicans for Obama' to see what I mean). From the sounds of it, he favors the Republican platform on some issues and the Democratic one with others. The issues he feels strongly about are the ones where he largely sides with the Republicans, but if they are what I think they are (extrapolating from his prison comments) then those issues wouldn't have been particularly big or come up a lot during recent election cycles, so he'll side with the Democrats/Democratic candidates because he takes their side on the issues that have come up.

(Granted, a lot of this is extrapolation - on the whole, RDJ isn't all that politically involved, at least in comparison to a lot of other celebrities. The fact that he was Republican made big news a while back, but the same happens when anyone from Hollywood turns out to be Republican, as other people people tend to assume they are liberal by default.)

so your evidence that he is a republican is that he sometimes supports things in line with parts of the republican party but we should disregard the things and candidates he supports in the democratic party because an unsourced article once said he was maybe conservative?

Since when is the New York Times unsourced?

“I have a really interesting political point of view, and it’s not always something I say too loud at dinner tables here, but you can’t go from a $2,000-a-night suite at La Mirage to a penitentiary and really understand it and come out a liberal. You can’t. I wouldn’t wish that experience on anyone else, but it was very, very, very educational for me and has informed my proclivities and politics every since.”

okay so show me the part where he says he's a Republican? it looks like he's specifically NOT using the word 'Republican'

He just said he has conservative political views. That's the most direct statement he's made about his political views, and after years of everyone identifying him as a Republican he has yet to correct anyone on it. And yes, he can absolutely be a Republican who supports Obama (especially in Los Angeles!).
