It is not stealing/theft. The person watching a non-sanctioned copy is not taking anything from anyone else. In your example, the car is gone, because the person wants it/takes it. What is physically taken in this instance? Did the person steal DVDs? Nope! Did the person steal a master copy of the work in question? Nope!

Yes, it is illegal, but it is not theft.

It is theft. When you steal from a big, anonymous company it doesn't seem like it. But it is. Every court in the world would agree.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
EVERY court?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-20 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe not the Taliban.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Taliban... the new Nazis.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
yes because everyone who lives under the taliban has plenty of time to download anime

(Anonymous) 2013-05-21 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
That's such a random comment.

Every court in the world would agree.

What the fuck? No they wouldn't. That is blatantly untrue. Copyright infringement is copyright infringement. It's a completely separate area of law.

Go read the wikipedia article on copyright infringement or something. It will be a far better use of your time than blabbering on about things you so obviously don't understand.

In some places there are exceptions to the relevant laws about copyright infringement (not theft) if you download a copy of something for temporary use but don't keep it. IME, they date back to before music streaming services were as common.

Shoplifting in Aldi is stealing from a big anonymous company.

Illegally downloading game of thrones is infringing on the copyright of a big anonymous company.

There there, I know it's difficult.

Something doesn't have to be a physical object to be stolen. Intellectual property is as much open to theft as is a painting.

It's theft. I'd argue in OP's situation it's not as bad as other things, but it's still theft.

I agree, and I am in the same situation. If I ever get caught I will pay my fine and get on with my life, because at the end of the day I actually do steal something, even if I don't want to it is still stealing. It isn't like I could not survive withut my television shows, so in theory I could stop downloading and start watching television and get the shows a year (or not at all) later...

Yeah; I really wish more media was available more places, and I can totally sympathize (since my biggest fan interest is JPop, which loves region-locking/not selling internationally), but at the end of the day it's still stealing.

I agree.
