Personally, I don't see how downloading something is any different than using a VHS to record it. Except fandom and the internet wasn't around back then to say "VHS IS STEALING!"

I'm not sure about VHS, but wasn't there a "cassette recording is stealing" copyright panic?

Home taping is killing music!

Actually..

I remember when VCRs were new and scary and real-life fleshy people were flipping their shit because YOU COULD RECORD A SHOW AND WATCH IT AND GIVE IT TO OTHER PEOPLE AND OMG WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE COPYRIGHTS.

So it's not different. It's still having something in your possession that you do not legally have the right to own.

Actually, for a while broadcast companies did say that. Eventually, they calmed down and it was decided that people could have a recording, but they were not allowed to sell or reproduce or rebroadcast it. It happened again with DVRs (there were arguments against them and some people tried to block them).

A) Yes, actually, even without the internet, there was a lot of "VHS IS STEALING!" going on.

B) A VHS is pretty finite. It can only be viewed or passed around so many times to so many people. A file online is infinite.

An online file is far from infinite. Tech changes a lot more quickly then it did back in the years of vhs, and I can think of a lot more files I've lost then VHS tapes.

Streams go down.
Files get corrupted.
Media players change so you can no longer play old files.
And people just plain old run out of space and delete files.

This. I have more VHS copies of episodes than digital copies.
